Open Question: At what age do you start to offer juices?
|
My daughter will be 6 months on the 17th and am not considering it yet, but I was just wondering what age you start to offer juice? And is it okay to give her formula in a sippy cup? She has been holding her own bottles for about 2 months now and is very good at it. I was thinking about starting her on a sippy with formula, is that okay?

Open Question: she shouldnt have more solids should she?
|
i was at baby group the other day and we were discussing weaning,i said holly is 8months old has 5-6 breastfeeds a day,and maybe 1/4 weetabix or yogurt for brekkie, small bowl of cooked veg at dinner followed by small amount of fruit, for tea she has another small bowl of veg or bread with cheese spread, chopped fruit these kind of things....
some days however she eats alot less to the point no solids get eaten,im not worried i always offer bf first then solids,WELL....some girl at baby group said ''ooh no,she should only be having 1or2 bf a day the rest should be solids''...
this isn't true is it? im sure that breastmilk still contains all the nutrients she needs and solids are for fun...or am i wrong? does what im doing sound right to you?
thanks in advance!!x

Open Question: Christening Questions! Please help a confused mummy.?
|
We have decided we will Christen our little boy.
But, since my mother just happens to 'forget' the details of our Christenings, and my husband only became Christened at the age of 13, we have no idea how to go about it.
1. How old does he have to be, or what is a 'good age' for Christening?
2. Is the white gown the same for both girls and boys?
3. Is there usually a 'reception' like thing, after the official ceremony??
I'm so sorry if these questions seem juvenile, I am just asking here, before I explore more official routes.
Thanks!

Open Question: Are mothers of infants concerned about Melamine?
|
My children are older now and not on formula but I would be HIGHLY concerned about this issue. How can the FDA say trace amounts are safe within a few days of saying it's dangerous? I'm just curious what you mothers think about this and if you're finding other ways to feed your infants...
I looked up melamine and this is what I found:
Melamine is described as being "Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Chronic exposure may cause cancer or reproductive damage. Eye, skin and respiratory irritant.” However, the toxic dose is on a par with common table salt with an LD50 of more than 3 grams per kilogram of bodyweight.[12] FDA scientists explained that when melamine and cyanuric acid are absorbed into the bloodstream, they concentrate and interact in the urine-filled renal microtubules, then crystallize and form large numbers of round, yellow crystals, which in turn block and damage the renal cells that line the tubes, causing the kidneys to malfunction
Let me know what you're thinking/doing and how educated you are on this issue....
cath... I'm talking about Melamine in infant formulas as was recently discovered here in the USA. (Not in other plastics although that should be a concern too)
We don't give babies table salt.....ever.
To the moms that are breastfeeding..GREAT!
Keep it up for at least a year and this wont be a concern. :)
The question is to mothers who are formula feeding. :|

Open Question: Does pumping over a long period of time reduce it's effectiveness?
|
My son was born 16weeks ago - he was born 8 weeks early and was in the hospital for 51 days. The entire time he was in the hospital I was pumping and storing my breast milk. He is now breast feeding all of his feedings except one - which is a bottle of breast milk with added calories for catch up growth. I used to be able to easily pump 4 ounces per breast and now I am only getting 2-3 ounces. When nursing, my son is always satisfied when coming off the breast so I know he's getting enough from me - but why such a huge difference in the amount I'm pumping?
Is he more effective at getting my milk than the pump? Can you build up a kind of immunity to the pump where it becomes less effective? Does the time of day that I'm pumping make a difference?
(sorry for so many questions)

Open Question: Breastfeeding and medictions and gallbladder issues?
|
I had my little girl 7 weeks ago, and I need to have my gallbladder removed. I'm having gallbladder attacks that last for 8 hours ever other day. My doctor gave me vicodin to ease the pain during an attack until I get my gallbladder removed, but if I take it, then I can't breastfeed for 24 hours after I take the medication. I feel SOOO bad supplementing with formula, even for a day. Did anyone else feel bad? Why do I feel so guilty? It's like I'm failing my daughter! I know she's not going to remember the few days she wasn't breastfed, but I still can't help feeling guilty. I would love to hear other mothers who supplemented with formula occasionally, and let me know how your baby reacted to the formula.
My doc knows I'm breastfeeding, but said this is the only thing that will be strong enough to help with the pain. Maybe that's not true? Does anyone know of safe and strong pain killers?

Open Question: Is your baby's head Symmetrical?

My baby is three moths old and his head seems a funny shape to me. His forehead comes way out on one side and he's all flat on the other side of his face. I asked the doctor and he didn't seem concerned or give me an explanation, or suggest that it might go away. He was born with the help of the vacuum, but I don't know if that hadsanything to do with it.

Open Question: Has anyone had their baby sleep with their eyes wide open?
|
Ok so last night I had the BIGGEST scare of my whole life. I had my daughter down sleeping and I went to walk in and there she was laying motionless with her eyes literally wide open, I don't even really remember what happened in those next few moments, my heart fell out of my chest, I almost threw up and i ran and grabbed her and and was just freaking out. Obviously i think that you get what Thought had happened i don't think that I need to state the obvious.
Anyways so she jerked and fluttered her eyes a bit and smiled at me but then she kind of freaked out because i was ripping her up from her nap. I feel horrible because I know that i scared her but i just dont even know what I was doing at that point... i think that once you become a mother that's amy mom's greatest fear. But long story short she was sleeping and I know she was sleeping for 2 reasons. The first being that she is never that still for that long just not moving... shes ALWAYS moving some part of her body and she after that happened I took her out in the living room and she fell asleep in my arms and did the same thing. This time i didnt freak out ( ha ha ) but it did kind of freak me out to see someone ( especially my baby) sleeping with their eyes wide open! Ya know usually when this happens they areslightlyy open...
Has anyone had this happen with their kids? Shes 6 mths in 5 days by the way.
THANKS :)
oh thank god, It just scared the shit out of me! Thanks!

Open Question: Baby car seat for a Toyota Yaris Hatch?

We have a Toyota Yaris Hatch, and are struggling to find a car seat for a newborn that can safely be installed to fit. I was wondering if anybody could recommend a brand that they have used with the same car, or similar. We are considering changing the car, but don't feel we are able to afford it for a while! We are not looking at having a capsule style.
I tried various different Safe N Sound car seats, and yet I still struggle with it fitting. Any particular model you recommend?

Open Question: How to get a baby on a schedule?
|
My almost 4 month old baby has been such a treat to me, but it's time to kiss the 2am nights and noon sleep-ins goodbye lol(as much as I have loved sleeping in till noon, but unfortunately the house work doesn't get done.) She's a great girl shes slept her nights since she was 4 days old, but the initial getting her to sleep before 2am has been a hassle. She was sorta on a schedule when I went and visited my parents for 3 weeks but they're 3 hours behind us so her going to bed between 8-10pm their time was the same time she was going to bed here and she was waking up basically at the same time. She eats 8-9 4 oz bottles a day (wasn't able to bf) she refuses to eat more and at her 2 month appointment she was 12lbs 13oz (born at 7 7) and I was told then I was feeding her too much but shes been drinking the same ever since and I feel like I'm depriving her. So how do I go about getting her to going to bed earlier,I keep her awake most of the day...actually I'm lucky if I can get 3 half hour naps outta her.
Oh and one last question I guess, she keeps waking up crying for like 2sec-1 min then goes back to sleep like a painful cry or an irritated cry
Thanks for the help :)

Open Question: Would you steal for your child?
|
kinda weird question but another question i saw on her inspired it.
make up a scenario, say you NEED formula and you just could NOT raise any money for it anyhow you tried. would you just take it? or like if your child had a bad infection or something and you couldnt afford medicine but you just so happened to be at the pharmacy one day and you see the EXACT thing you need while the pharmacists back is turned....would you take it?!
obviously this is a stupid question cuz if you have a child you most certainly should be able to buy formula and get medical coverage. im just up late lol.
i would take them!
im going to sleep after this question, so no more stupid questions tonight =)
am i working? no
do i have formula and medical coverage? yes
im not actually thinking about stealing something. it was a question for fun

Open Question: Is it worth it to pump and store breast milk to give to the adoptive family of my baby?
|
I decided to place my baby for adoption. The adoptive family lives about an hour and a half away and I'm interested in pumping and freezing my own breast milk in baggies to take up to them whenever possible. Is this worth it?
...And when I say worth it, I meant because they live so far away. I would be afraid of spoiling. I live in Arizona and the baby is due in March. It's gonna be hot.

Open Question: Will I be able to afford a baby, and be financially okay?
|
I'm joining the air national guard. My husband and I just need a little boost, and active duty is too much for me I think. But, I am joining at the start of the year, and after I get home from tech school we plan on getting pregnant. We should have a few grand in the savings because we are also planning on paying off my car, so that we dont have a car payment...its about 350 now, so it will be nice not to have that! But, after paying all of our bills we should have around 1400 dollars left over, and of course by the time a baby would be born my husband will get about a 200 dollar raise per month..not much, but something. So, basically by the time the baby is born we will have 1600 left over a month. I am planning on having at least 3,000 dollars saved for baby items, and we can also buy stuff as we go along. We will have a little more than that, but when I get home from tech school we want to go on a nice big vacation probably to Hawaii before we have kids. (we never had a wedding or honeymoon, so this will somewhat take it's place).
What do you think? We want enough to be able to go out to dinner on the weekends, a movie here and there...there is a drive in here. Plus, we live an hour away from Orlando, so we love going up there.
We have waited long enough..lol.We have been together for about 6 years, and married for almost 3, and Im not planning on getting pregnant until next summer or fall.
We dont feel the need to travel much, but taking one nice vacation together would be nice, just to say we did it, and after bootcamp..ill need one!
haha...thanks!! I don't want to wait anymore, but I have to join the guard first...one more big event before babies...lol...than, I will for sure be good and ready

she's 6 months and 8.2kgs and 68cm length......she was born small at 2.5kg (5p8oz) and is only 1 kg lighter than a friennds 9month old boy and he was born at 9pound....

Open Question: what would you do if you were born a boy, but turned into a girl at six months old, and you are now 18?
|
well, thats me basically. i was born as a boy, but when i was 10 weeks old my circumcision was screwed up really badly, and the best path to take was to re-construct the remains of my penis into a vagina - making me a girl. now im 18, and im very happy with my life, a happy young woman, i wouldn't trade having a vagina for anything, had boyfriends, had my ears pierced, and with no plans to go back to being a boy. what would you do if you were in my position? stay a girl - as you have been for all of your life bar 3 months, or go back to how you were at birth? just curious, ive made my decision - i did think long and hard about it, but i know that im happy staying the way i am.
of course i can have sex, and masturbate and all that - my vagina retained most of the nerves, and it was re-constructed to look just like a normal vagina - mine looks just like any girl's natural vagina.
obviously since i asked my parents about everything again, they clarified that i was 10 weeks old, not 10 months old when the accident happened, and yes i might need a finger cut off - its just a coincidence that i could end up losing two body parts.

Open Question: How are people still advocating the "cry it out method" with babies?
|
My friend told me today, that her 4 month old daugher sleeps through the night now because she allowed her to cry herself to sleep, and also allowed her to scream/cry when she woke up in the night until she lulled herself to sleep. She told me that her daughter needed to learn independence, and learn how to sleep on her own. Babies have a whole lifetime to be independent, don't we want them to need us a little bit at such a young age? This method is absurd to me!! Wouldn't it be on the verge of bad parenting/neglect?? Of course this works for the baby to sleep all through the night, why would they continue to wake up in the night if they already know that their needs aren't going to be met? It makes me feel sad for the babies that have to go through this. I could never impose this on my 10 week old, I don't have the heart to let him just cry!! This is the only voice they have, and they are in obvious need of something when they cry, be it just to be held and nurtured. With everything we know about a childs needs how is this still going on today?
Maybe this is just being used as an excuse so some parents can be comfortable and get more rest at night instead of actually having to get up and take care of a baby the way it should be?
MDL: I fully agree, I'm talking about letting them cry for a few minutes, I'm talking about the people that let their babies wale themselves to sleep, and don't get up with them in the night, let them cry until they fall back to sleep. Pure parenting laziness at the childs expense.
MDL: I meant I'm *not* talking about letting them cry for a few minutes, lol sorry about that.
